The genesis of this lake is very interesting. In 1930 the motorway and a canal, which leads through the North of Germany, were built. The workers needet sand for their buildings and took it out of the area, where the lake is situated today. After the motorways and canals completion, nature took care of this lovely spot and in the course of time our jewel came into being. Today the Barleber Lake iis a narural preserve and recreation area in the immedite vicinity of Magdeburg.

All vistors, coming to rest at this place, were expected by beach and its varied offers like a restaurant, a boat hire, beachvolleyball places, a kiosk, children´s playground and so on. Season lasts from May 1 st till September 15 th daily from 9:00 to 19:00.

If your journey there is long, we would recommend you to visit the waterway cross, which is a 10 minute walk remote.
It´s amazing to observe a heavy ship crossing another river over a bridge full of water. A technical masterly performance!

You can also watch ships, which get over the difference in altitude between the river Elbe and the canal, which leads through northern Germany.

it would be better to inform yourself about the water temperature.

The Barleber´s waterquality became better in the course of time since 1990. And in the last years there weren´t any problems.
Very clear water and “drink water´s quality” !!!
